Strangest beauty fads of 2015

Strangest beauty fads of 2015

From silly to plain bizarre, here are some of the trends in the world of hair, make-up and skin care that found many takers

The things women and men will do in the name of beauty gets more insane each year. And 2015 was no exception, with a number of fads going viral on social media. From women colouring their armpit hair to glitter on men’s beards and applying make-up to look hungover, there was no dearth of crazy ideas gaining popularity. After hrs does a round-up of those that grabbed eyeballs.

Glitter beards

Getting into the festive spirit, males experimented with their fuzz by adding a dose of glitter. Bearded men across the US started uploading pictures of themselves on Instagram with the hashtag #glitterbeard. From gold to silver and even pink coloured sparkles were seen gracing these men’s facial hair in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. Earlier this year, men also took to the merman fad where they coloured their beard and locks in bright hues of turquoise, orange and green. Wonder what the dudes will try in 2016?

Bubble nails

We’ve seen some pretty funky nail art over the years, but bubble nails or hump nails had us stumped. The technique involves applying acrylic gel on top of the nails in a dome like shape which is then filed to create a short, square edge. Aside from the non-appealing look, one wonders how much work can be done with lumps on your nails.

Coloured armpit hair

If you weren’t grossed out by the idea of women growing out their armpit hair (and posting pictures of it on social media), this trend took it one step further. Women dyed their underarm hair in bright hues such as neon pink, electric blue and scarlet red. Trust Miley Cyrus to join in and encourage the fad. The wild pop star posted an Instagram photo flaunting her pink pits in May this year. The hashtag #dyedpits caught on with scores of ladies doing the same.

Semen facial

In the quest for youthful and radiant skin, women have applied all sorts of concoctions on to their face. However, the semen facial takes the prize for the strangest. Beauty blogger Tracy Kiss claims the facial helped cure her of rosacea and that it’s a very “natural and healthy thing to do.” It apparently has anti-inflammatory properties and rejuvenates the skin. Any takers?

Hangover make-up

While generally most of us hide our faces behind large sunglasses post a hangover, a Korean-based trend suggests using make-up to look like that all the time. The technique that’s known as aegyo-sal requires one to create puffiness under the eyes. Using a dark eyeshadow below one’s peepers and then topping it up with blush under the creases it creates an illusion of a sick face. Apparently the popularity is because Korean women feel puffy eyes are a sign of youthfulness.

Multi-masking

Facial masks have seen a surge in popularity this year with a number of brands offering those that target specific skin concerns. And why use one mask when you can use three. Women have been uploading pictures of themselves with their faces covered in various masks, almost like a tribal war paint. The idea of multimasking is to use different masks for different areas of the face so they can work on various skin problems.

Clown contouring

Contouring has definitely come into focus this year to help one create a flawless look. Clown contouring involves using a considerable amount of highlighter, foundation, concealer and blush making one initially look almost like a clown, before blending it in to create a perfect finish. While similar to regular contouring, this one is an extreme version, suggested only for those who have their make-up skills pat.
