Sucheta Sharma James has been scorching the ramps across the country for more than a decade now. She is also fit as a fiddle, which could be attributed to her husband Harrison James who is a fitness trainer by profession. Sharma spends an hour daily working out, apart from taking particular care about what she eats to maintain her flawless skin and long hair. She shares her fitness mantras with DNA.
Work it out
I train at my husband’s gym at Santacruz. We do Stud Training, which is a high-intensity workout keeping the goal and physical problems in mind. It combines a mix of many forms of exercises that have been developed from yoga, high jumps etc. Since I work in the fashion industry, I have to look lean. The focus is not just on one body part — it’s a mix of cardio and abs. Earlier I used to hate doing push ups but now I can do them easily. Over time your body shows improvement and you become stronger. Today, I can do pull ups and hold a headstand for six minutes.
Youthful impact
My goal is to look younger. Age is just a number to me but having a youthful body is important so that I can work for more years in the fashion industry. Also with the number of crimes against women on the rise, one shouldn’t have to depend on men for protection; being strong helps me feel good about myself.
Food wise
I am particular about eating home food as much as possible as I want to eat clean and hygienic food. I’ve been a vegetarian for two years now. My daily meal consists of rice, dal, vegetables and chapati. I don’t follow any rule like not eating after six pm or eating something every two hours. Instead, I have four square meals — breakfast, lunch, mid-evening snack and dinner. Luckily, I don’t have a sweet tooth. But I am fond of dark chocolate and prefer chocolates to Indian sweets. I also try and eat fruits like figs so that I take sugar in the natural form. Just before a fashion week I try and control myself and eat sensibly, but otherwise my cheat food is parathas, aloo bhaji, and puris.
Maintaining a routine
I have tried a number of diets in the past, but nothing really worked for me. I think it’s important to develop a healthy lifestyle and eat sensibly. Use food as a fuel and then train hard. My husband is my fitness idol. He’s so dedicated to his fitness routine, despite working all day he gets up at four in the morning to go for a run and has managed to maintain a great body with no steroids or supplements.
