Months after Delhi High Court upheld state government notifications prohibiting the manufacture, storage, distribution, or sale of scented or flavored tobacco, pan masala, gutkha, and similar products in the national capital, lieutenant governor VK Saxena on Thursday extended the ban for one more year.
An official from the LG secretariat said Saxena invoked his powers provided under Article 239 AA (4) of the Constitution and issued the orders in light of the rising number of oral cancer cases in Delhi.
“While extending the ban on manufacturing and sale of tobacco products, the LG also emphasized these items were now affecting the health of children and youngsters and this menace should be contained for future generations,” said an official, adding that the LG has also issued instructions to enforce the ban strictly.
