Some journeys are destined to inspire, and Wing Commander Anjali Rathee (Retd.) is living proof. Raised in a third-generation defense family, Anjali grew up surrounded by stories of service, discipline, and honor. Her father, a dedicated officer in the Indian Army, and her fearless, independent mother shaped her upbringing with a unique blend of courage and compassion. Their lessons laid the foundation for a life of achievements across military and civilian domains.

Taking Flight: The Dream of the Indian Air Force

From a young age, Anjali was drawn to the uniform—the discipline, the pride, and the adventure it symbolized. Inspired by her family’s legacy and driven by a deep sense of purpose, she made the bold decision to join the Indian Air Force (IAF). Commissioned into the Flying Branch in 2009, she embraced a career filled with purpose and challenge.

“Becoming a helicopter pilot was a conscious decision,” Anjali shares. “The dynamic nature of helicopter operations—ranging from combat support to humanitarian aid—offered an adventure unlike any other. It combined technical precision with service to the nation.”

Defining Missions: Life-Saving and Humanitarian Operations

Reflecting on her 14 years of service, Anjali’s eyes light up as she recalls one unforgettable mission. “We were airlifting a wounded soldier in turbulent weather. He was in immense pain, and all that mattered was bringing him back safely,” she recounts. “When we landed, knowing we saved his life, the feeling was indescribable.”

Her humanitarian missions were just as impactful. Whether providing flood relief, rescuing stranded villagers, or delivering essential supplies during natural calamities, Anjali experienced firsthand the power of teamwork and resilience. Each mission reinforced her belief that purpose-driven service can create profound change.

Breaking Barriers as a Woman Officer

In an environment historically dominated by men, Anjali carved her place with grit and determination. “An aircraft doesn’t see gender; it only recognizes skill,” she asserts. The societal perceptions she faced only fueled her resolve. With the support of her colleagues, seniors, and family, she proved that competence knows no gender.

One of her proudest moments came in 2013 when she received the prestigious Women Icon Award. “That recognition reaffirmed that I was on the right path, contributing meaningfully to my country,” she says. However, every day in uniform was a badge of honor for Anjali—a privilege she cherished deeply.

A New Horizon: From Military to Corporate

After retiring from the Air Force, Anjali embarked on a new challenge. Equipped with the leadership and strategic thinking honed during her military career, she pursued an MBA at FMS, Delhi University. Today, as she begins her corporate journey with Capgemini, Anjali is ready to channel her military discipline and adaptability into her new role.

“Transitioning from military life required introspection and adaptability,” she admits. “But I’m embracing this phase with the same passion and determination that defined my Air Force career.”

The Voguestar Mrs. India Triumph

In 2024, Anjali broke yet another stereotype by participating in and winning the Voguestar Mrs. India pageant. “Women should have the freedom to pursue their dreams—age and profession should never be limitations,” she emphasizes. Her husband played a pivotal role, encouraging her to step out of her comfort zone.

“Winning the title wasn’t just my triumph—it was a testament to the resilience of every woman balancing multiple roles,” Anjali Rathee reflects. The experience was exhilarating and reaffirmed that women can wear multiple hats and shine in all of them.

Fitness as a Way of Life

Fitness has been integral to Anjali’s life, dating back to her days as a gold medalist in cross country and the best athlete at the Air Force Academy. Even now, with a packed schedule, she prioritizes an hour of exercise daily.

“Consistency is key,” she says. “Fitness is about feeling strong, energized, and ready to take on any challenge—not just looking good.”

Her dietary habits are rooted in balance. While she believes in mindful eating and balanced nutrition, she acknowledges life’s occasional indulgences. “When I indulge, I detox the next day with fruits and water. It’s all about balance and sustainability.”

Advice for Women Balancing Multiple Roles

As a mother of two, Anjali understands the challenges of balancing professional aspirations and family life. “Perfection is a myth,” she says candidly. “There will be days when you can’t do it all, and that’s okay. Prioritize, ask for help, and don’t feel guilty about it.”

Her advice to busy women prioritizing fitness is simple: “Do your bit whenever you can. Even 20-30 minutes of movement can make a difference. Small, consistent efforts go a long way.”

Empowering Women to Break Barriers

Anjali Rathee ‘s message to women is one of empowerment and self-belief. “Learn to prioritize your well-being first—only then can you care for those around you. Believe in yourself, take risks, and own your journey with pride. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and don’t be afraid to challenge norms.”

What’s Next?

Anjali’s story is far from over. As she begins her corporate journey at Capgemini, she’s determined to excel, drive meaningful change, and continue inspiring youth to break barriers.

“This is yet another exciting chapter,” she says with a smile. “And I’m embracing it with the same passion, commitment, and resilience that have defined my journey so far.”

Wing Commander Anjali Rathee (Retd.) is a beacon of courage and empowerment, proving that with passion and determination, the sky is never the limit—it’s just the beginning.
