Nabhi Chikitsa: Oiling the Navel

The ancient practice of nabhi chikitsa or pechoti, of using warm oil in your belly button, promotes balance, heals, and nourishes the body. The navel centre, or the Manipuraka chakra, represents the mental realm while corresponding to the fire element in the body.

Nabhi Chakras and Healing

The Nabhi plays the most important role in the development of the body from the very beginning of life, even at an embryonic stage. In Ayurveda, Nabhi is believed to be the root of Siras present between Pakvashaya and Amashaya.

There are 114 chakras in our body. These chakras are like major nerve centers of our body which are associated with complex nerve bundles, major organs as well as the physiological, emotional, and spiritual well-being of a person. The energies of these chakras are a little imbalanced and get shifted by our daily activities which include mental as well as physical stress.

Manipura chakra is the 3rd major chakra among them; it is located 3 fingers above the Nabhi. This chakra is considered very important as it is connected to the central nervous system of the body. It is associated with the Kidney as well as Pancreas and the adrenal gland which has a major role in digestion, metabolism, and elimination. Hence, we can understand why it is considered as the seat of the body’s Agni/fire (digestive power). Thus, taking care of Nabhi nourishes the body and takes care of various body organs as well as other parts of the body. Nabhi Chikitsa is also a healing therapy written in our Vedas.

How is Nabhi Chikitsa performed?

Preparation:

  • The practitioner begins by cleaning the navel area.
  • Warm herbal oils are prepared according to the individual’s dosha (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha) or health condition. Common oils include sesame, coconut, or castor oil, infused with herbs.

Application of Oil:

  • A small amount of warm oil is gently poured into the navel. The warmth helps improve circulation and facilitates absorption.
  • Sometimes, a cloth or cotton swab soaked in the oil is placed in the navel.

Gentle Massage:

  • The practitioner may gently massage the navel and surrounding area in circular motions to stimulate energy flow and activate nearby organs.
  • This helps relieve tension, improve digestion, and balance the body’s energy.

Rest:

  • The patient lies still for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the oils to penetrate deeply into the tissues and organs through the navel.
  • Breathing exercises or meditation may be recommended during this time to enhance relaxation.

Post-Treatment:

  • After the therapy, the navel is cleaned, and the patient may be advised to rest and drink warm water or herbal tea.
  • A light, easily digestible meal is suggested after the session.

Benefits of Nabhi Chikitsa:

  • Improves digestion: Helps with issues like constipation, bloating, and indigestion.
  • Balances the doshas: Restores harmony between Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
  • Relieves stress: The therapy is calming and soothing, helping to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • Boosts immunity: Enhances the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
  • Relieves menstrual discomfort: Often used to alleviate pain or irregularities in the menstrual cycle.
