Shirodhara defined itself, “Shiro” means head, and “Dhara” means Flow. Shirodhara therapy involves pouring oil, milk, buttermilk, or water onto the forehead. It has relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on our minds and body. It helps improve sleep quality, relieve Insomnia, and reduce stress and anxiety.
Steps in Shirodhara Therapy
- During the treatment, the patient lies face up on a Droni (Ayurvedic therapy table), with a Vartti (headband) tied around the forehead.
- A vessel with a central orifice is filled with medicated oil (liquid) and suspended six to eight inches above the patient’s head.
- The liquid delicately drips through a small hole onto the forehead, safeguarded by a lightweight barrier for the eyes.
- Typically lasting 30 to 90 minutes, the Shirodhara therapy may include a massage before or after the treatment.
- The flow of oil is set at a controlled rate. The headband protects the eyes in case of any oil spillage.

Illnesses Addressed by Shirodhara Therapy

Shirodhara treatment is particularly effective in managing stress, anxiety, insomnia, and migraines. Additionally, it aids in reducing symptoms associated with hypertension and promoting general relaxation. Stress is a profound risk factor for almost all non –communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and neurological disease.
The holistic nature of Ayurveda means that Shirodhara therapy contributes to overall health by addressing imbalances in the body.
