The body, mind and soul work as a system of energy. We connect our body, mind and soul to keep energy flowing within us. This energy flow can be abundant or restricted, depending on our ‘state of being’ is our overall feeling of health and wellness.

It refers to how balanced we feel on all levels of our being. Whether we are happy or sad, sick or well, disconnected from spirit or not, we are either in or out of alignment with who we really are ‘being’ in each moment and it changes constantly. The goal is to harmonise your state of being so that you can effortlessly create the life that you want. Here’s how the body, mind and soul fits together…

When in alignment we:

Treat ourselves and our bodies with love and respect
Have a sense of purpose and universal service
A holistic approach to your body, mind and soul can not only transform your health and well-being, it can benefit your relationships, make your more patient, understanding, loving and generally help you to become more awake as a person in your daily life. Below are six simple things you can do to help add to your life, by living from a holistic view:

Eat clean

Your body is your vehicle, nourish it and care for it. Our body is fuelled and thrives better on clean, organic foods. So try flushing out the toxins in your body with green tea, lots of water and eating lots of fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Recycle energy
Think about how you impact not just the environment, but people in your vicinity. Try and share wisdom, help others and lend your energy to those around you.

Let yourself grow
The cool thing about knowledge is that there is always something new that can add to your life. People who are open to learning, discussing and experiencing new things are less judgmental and more educated. So read new books, visit websites, enroll in courses and begin to surround yourself with like-minded people you can learn and grow from.

Stop rushing

You are not too busy, stop wishing your life and time away. Make time for the things that add to your day. Find things that you love like exercise or taking classes; do something you’ve always wanted to do. You will be surprised that when you stop and recharge how much more time you have for things you use to feel you didn’t have time for.

It really is true, when you love life it loves you right back.

Connect
Find other like-minded holistic people, they are everywhere. Join people in your work space who like yoga at a class, join a course, go to a festival or even connect to online groups where you can share experiences, learn and connect with people.

The basis for Vedic yoga
The primary texts for Vedic yoga are commonly known as the Vedas. The word ‘veda’ means knowledge. So the Vedas are considered books of knowledge or wisdom. More importantly they are considered revelation or shrutti. There are four primary texts that comprise the Vedas. These are the Rig Veda (considered the oldest), Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda.

Together they provide over 10,000 mantras for practitioners. What is known is that the Vedas are or at least portions are considerably older than 1500 BC. The Vedas were not written at one particular time in history, but rather were complied and preserved by families over a much larger period of time. Within the Vedas, we do find astrological references dating back to 6500 BC. Making portions of the Vedas over 8,500 years old, and making the Rig Veda the oldest spiritual book still commonly used today.

With our busy lives trying to balance the demands of family and work or school — and coping with media pressure to look and eat a certain way— it can be difficult for any woman or girl to maintain a healthy nutrition.

But eating a balanced, nutritious diet is especially important for women. Not only can the right food support your mood, boost your energy, and help you maintain a healthy weight, it can also be a huge support through the different stages in a woman’s life.

Healthy food can help reduce premenstrual syndrome, boost fertility, make pregnancy and nursing easier, ease symptoms of menopause, and keep your bones strong.

Whatever your age or situation, committing to a healthy diet will help you look and feel your best and get the most out of life.

In addition to diet, exercise and other lifestyle factors can also play an important role in health. Smoking and drinking too much alcohol can increase your chances of developing osteoporosis, while weight-bearing exercise (such as walking, dancing, yoga) can lower your risk and is vital for a woman’s healthy bones at any age.

While women tend to need fewer calories than men, requirements for certain vitamins and minerals, are much higher.

Hormonal changes associated with menstruation, childbearing, and menopause mean that women have a higher risk of anaemia, weakened bones and osteoporosis, requiring a higher intake of nutrients such as iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin B9 (folate).

Healthy food children should consume

Whether they’re toddlers or in their teens, children develop a natural preference for foods they enjoy the most. To encourage healthy eating habits, the challenge is to make nutritious choices appealing.

Focus should be on overall diet rather than specific foods. Kids should be eating whole, minimally processed food — food that is as close to its natural form as possible — and avoid packaged and processed food.

Be a role model, the childhood impulse to imitate is strong, so don’t expect your child to eat vegetables while you gorge on potato chips.

Disguise the taste of healthier foods. Add vegetables to a beef stew, for example, or mash carrots up with mashed potato, or add a sweet dip to slices of apple.

Cook more meals at home as restaurant have more added sugar and unhealthy fat. Get kids involved in shopping for groceries and preparing meals. You can teach them about different foods and how to read food labels.

Keep plenty of fruit, vegetables, and healthy beverages (water, milk, pure fruit juice) on hand so kids avoid unhealthy snacks like soda, chips, and cookies.
